Hi, My comrades in SICA,

‘Southern India Cinematographers Association’ (SICA) is an umbrella organization which aims  promotes, preserve and advance the cause of  art and science of cinematography. 

We have to remember the fact that, we are, first of all cinematographers, guys who love looking through the camera, feeling the light, waiting for the right moment... even before we joined the union or got elected.

So I thought we must spend some time regularly looking at our Art, studying the technique and styles that inspire us . 

The annual Oscar awards and it's nominees gives us the fair idea to us were the art and technology headed in our field.  Television may venerate the winners, but we members of SICA need the deeper understanding by studying the films and the nominees, to understand the narrative trends and the latest cinematic styles in main-stream studio funded international cinema. 

Towards this  vision, here is my first email. 

The nominees for Best Cinematography at the 88th Academy Awards are: 

John Seale for George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road 

Emmanuel Lubezki for Alejandro G. Iñárritu's The Revenant 

(he won the last two years)

Roger Deakins for Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario (his 13th nomination!) 

Ed Lachman for Todd Haynes' Carol

and 

Robert Richardison for Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight

Whats interesting is the age of the contenders and the various technologies they used in filming their projects..!? This goes to prove neither the camera nor the age of the cinematographer is important since both are just numbers. You can create ground breaking stuff at any age with any format, with or without CG, with light or only with natural light.

Cinematography is a great job, for we are always falling in love..with nature, with light and shadow, with colours, Hero, villain and of course with the beautiful ladies..their emotional struggles and upheavals. We cinematographers are always young at heart.

In case you find this interesting, do let me know if we can share and enthuse a lot of old guys to feel young in their hearts and start shooting again and a lot of young to aspire for greatness even if they don't have grey hair and wrinkles of wisdom!

என் நேசத்திற்குரிய SICA தோழர்களே,

வணக்கம்.

‘தென்னிந்திய ஒளிப்பதிவாளர்கள் சங்கம்’ (SICA) என்றழைக்கப்படும் நமது சங்கத்தின் அடிப்படையான நோக்கங்களில் ஒன்று, ஒளிப்பதிவு என்னும் இவ்வுன்னதக்கலையின் வரலாற்றைச் சுவடுகளை, அதன் மேன்மைகளை, அதன் பின்னிருக்கும் கலை மற்றும் அறிவியலை அறிந்துகொள்ளுவதும், போற்றுவதும், பாதுகாப்பதுமாகும். 

முதலில் நாம், நமக்கு நாமே நினைவுறுத்திக்கொள்ள வேண்டிய ஒன்றுண்டு. இச்சங்கத்தோடு நம்மை நாம் இணைத்துக்கொள்ளுவதற்கு முன்பாக.. சங்க பொறுப்புகளை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளுவதற்கும் முன்பாக.. ஏன், இவை எல்லாவற்றுக்கும் முதன்மையாக.. ‘கேமராவின் வழியாக இவ்வுலகைக் காண பேரவா கொண்டிருந்தவர்களாக, ஒளியும் இருளும் செய்யும் ஜாலத்தை அறிந்தவர்களாக, ஒரு அற்புதமான கணத்திற்காக காத்திருந்திருவர்களாக நாம் இருந்திருக்கிறோம்’. அதுவே நம்மை ஒன்றிணைத்திருக்கிறது. ஆம், அடிப்படையில் நாம் ஒளிப்பதிவாளர்கள், ஒளியின் காதலர்கள்..!

அதனடிப்படையில், நம்மைக் கவர்ந்த, நம்மை உற்சாகமூட்டிய படைப்புகளை, திரைப்படங்களைப் பற்றி விவாதிக்க, நமது கருத்துக்களைப் பகிர்ந்துகொள்ள.. எனது நேரத்தை, நமது நேரத்தை கொஞ்சம் உங்களோடு செலவழிக்கலாமென்று நினைக்கிறேன்.  

ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் வழங்கப்படும் ‘அகாதமி’ விருதுகளிலிருந்தும், அதில் பரிந்துரைப்பட்ட, விருது பெற்ற திரைப்படங்களின் மூலமும், இக்கலையின் வளர்ச்சிப் பாதை எதை நோக்கிப்போகிறது என்பதை நாம் அறிந்து கொள்கிறோம். அதன் வெற்றியாளர்களை ஊடகங்களோடு சேர்ந்து நாமும் கொண்டாடி மகிழ்கிறோம். ஆனால், அதையும் தாண்டி, ஒளிப்பதிவாளர்களாகிய நாம் (We, members of SICA) பரிந்துரைக்கப்பட்ட, வெற்றிப்பெற்ற ஒவ்வொரு திரைப்படத்திற்கும், பின்னிருக்கும் கலையை, அதன் அறிவியல் வளர்ச்சியை, அதைக் கையாண்ட படைப்பாளியின் திறமையை, உன்னதத்தை உற்றுக் கவனித்து ‘Main-stream Studio Funded International Cinema’ -வின் போக்கையும், அதன் திரைமொழியையும் புரிந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும்.

அப்பயணத்தில், இதோ என் முதல் கடிதம்!

இப்போட்டியாளர்களின் வயதிலும், குறிப்பிட்ட படங்களில், அவர்கள் பயன்படுத்திய வெவ்வேறான தொழில்நுட்பங்களிலும், அப்படி என்ன சுவாரசியம் அல்லது செய்தி நமக்கு இருந்து விட முடியும்?.. இருக்கிறது! அது, அவர்களுடைய வயதோ அல்லது பயன்படுத்திய கேமரா நுட்பங்களோ இல்லை. அவை வெறும் எண்கள் மட்டும்தான். நம்மை பரவசத்தில் ஆழ்த்திடும் கலையை.. எந்த வயதிலும் (any age), எந்த ஊடகமாயினும் அல்லது எந்த வடிவமாயினும் (any format), அது கணினியின் துணையுடனோ அல்லது துணையில்லாமலோ (with or without CG), செயற்கை ஒளியைப் பயன்படுத்தியோ அல்லது இயற்கை ஒளியை (மட்டும்) பயன்படுத்தியோ (light or only with natural light) படைத்திட ஒரு உன்னதக் கலைஞனால் முடியும் என்ற உண்மை அதிலிருக்கிறது.

இயற்கை, ஒளி, நிழல், வண்ணம், நாயகன், எதிர்நாயகன்.. அழகிய நாயகிகள் (ஆம்..அவர்கள் இல்லாமலா..!?) அவர்களின் உணர்வுப்பூர்வமான பாவனைகள் என.. அத்தனையையும், அருகிருந்து ரசிக்க, உணர்வுப்பூர்வமாக உணர, நமக்கு வாய்ப்பளிக்கும் இக்கலை நம்மை எப்போதும் இளமையானவர்களாக வைத்திருக்கிறது. ஆம்.. ஒளிப்பதிவாளர்கள் எப்போதும் மனதால் இளையவர்கள்தான்!

இத்துவக்கத்தை நீங்கள் விரும்பினால், சொல்லுங்கள்..! தொடருவோம்.. 

சாதனையாளர்களைக் குறித்து நாமறிந்த தகவல்களைப் பகிர்ந்து கொள்ளுவோம்.. அதன் வழி, நம் முந்தைய தலைமுறையைப் புத்துணர்ச்சி கொள்ளச் செய்வோம், மனதால் அவர்களை இளமையானவர்களாக உணரச்செய்து, மீண்டும் அவர்களை ஒளிப்பதிவு செய்யத் தூண்டுவோம். உன்னதமான இக்கலையின் மீது விருப்பம் கொண்ட இளைஞர்களை ஊக்கப்படுத்துவோம். உயர்வு பெறுவோம்.
